2 Chainz missed the “boat” with this one.
After hyping up the release of his debut album B.O.A.T.S (Based on a T.R.U. Story) with features by mega stars such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and John Legend, the main rapper on the album shines the least. After parlaying himself to stardom by featuring on other major artists’ tracks such as Nicki Minaj’s Beez In The Trap, as well as appearing on Drake and Nicki Minaj’s tours, Chainz had stepped into the spotlight. This was his chance to shine.
However, he failed miserably. HipHopDX has given the album a rating of two and a half out of five stars, saying that “2 Chainz’s rise so far has been based on his value as an accoutrement to other rappers—he’s the guest verse artist of the day. Now with his debut album, he’s revealed himself as bare and buffoonish.” It continues by saying, “For his part, 2 Chainz certainly sounds enthusiastic when he raps on the 13 tracks that make up his debut. But his energy has never been in doubt—it’s his lyrics.”
This is entirely the problem with the album. While the beats and the hooks may be hot, the lyrics have been anything but that. Chainz stated that he wanted people to see his growth, but his lyrics suggested otherwise, as he kept revolving around a small set of topics throughout the entire album. Chainz is a bubbly, energetic person to have featuring on your track if you’re another artist; however, if you want him to carry an entire track by himself, he simply can’t do it, and he proved it with this album.
