2014 NBA Mock Draft – LA Lakers Top Options in the Paint

Most NBA experts agree that the LA Lakers will need to add some depth at center after the season is over. Veteran Pau Gasol will likely be playing elsewhere next season and the only youngster the franchise has is Robert Sacre, who doesn’t figure to become a long-term answer for their problem.

The front office has done a good job assembling several quality young shooters over the past off-season and that could help this team as they look to move ahead. With a strong free agent market available next summer and the team having a pick in the first round, something that hasn’t happened lately, it figures this team could get better in quick fashion.

CBS Sports has suggested that Kansas center Joel Embiid is likely General Manager Mitch Kupchak’s top option in 2014 and it makes sense. The youngster has terrific size and good athleticism, but he’s not the most polished offensive player and that is something the team can work on with him.

Another option is Kentucky youngster Willie Cauley-Stein, who returned to the Wildcats despite many NBA draft experts predicting he would go in the first round this past year. Cauley Stein is more of a defensive force, but with Gasol and Chris Kaman both likely departing, this team is going to need players that can grab boards and get the offense running.

Both these players are strong candidates for the LA Lakers and young men they can build around, but this franchise is going to look much different over the next few years and the rebuilding process is going to start with the 2014 Draft.
