’50 Shades of Grey’ Movie: Bret Easton Ellis Won’t be Writing the Screenplay

The 50 Shades of Grey movie has lost another star connected to the project.

Recently, rumors that Emma Watson and Matt Bomer had been cast in the movie were denied by the producers, and Elizabeth Olsen made it known that she’s not pursuing the role of Anastasia Steele. E.L. James also told fans that she doesn’t want Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson to play Ana and Christian Grey.

But American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis took a page from the celebs who actually are interested in the movie by making sure that everyone knew that he wanted to work on it. Actors Ian Somerhalder and Alexander Skarsgard have both said that they’d like to play Christian, while Pretty Little Liars stars Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson are hoping to audition to play Ana. In the meantime, Ellis said that he’d be interested in writing the screenplay for the movie, which he has been tweeting about a lot.

However, according to The Stir, the writer recently tweeted this about 50 Shades:

It’s a very major disappointment to announce that I’ve somehow been taken off the list of possible screenwriters for Fifty Shades of Grey…

Thanks to the fans for the months of intense support. Your awesome enthusiasm and great suggestions were instructive and meaningful to me…

Most fans will be excited to learn that the producers are finally looking for a screenwriter for the 50 Shades of Grey movie since production isn’t moving along fast enough for them.

Now that Bret Easton Ellis is out, that means some of his picks for the movie probably are, too. He was pushing hard for porn star James Deen (who stars in his movie, The Canyons) to win the role of Christian Grey, but he’d also suggested Ian Somerhalder, Ryan Gosling, and Alex Pettyfer. For Ana, he picked Scarlett Johansson, Kristen Stewart, and Girls star Lena Dunham. His top director choice was David Cronenberg, who recently worked with Robert Pattinson on Cosmopolis. The unraveling rich character in that movie definitely seems like the kind of guy that Ellis would root for.

So why did Ellis get kicked off the list of potential 50 Shades screenwriters? Perhaps it has something to do with him complaining about Matt Bomer being a top choice of fans to play Christian Grey. If this is the case, then it could be seen as a hint that the filmmakers are interested in Bomer. Or maybe the filmmakers are just tired of Ellis tweeting about the movie and told him to stop using it to get attention.

So are you relieved that he’s not attached to it?
