The 50 Shades of Grey movie madness continues to seduce Hollywood and the countless fans of the titillating tome with salty chatter of just who should take on the lucrative Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele roles. New stars continue to emerge, as old favorites fall to the wayside—only to perhaps reappear again on the hot list. Now, another hunky topic can be added to the roster: Jake Gyllenhaal, he of the bold blue eyes and the considerable film cred.
Unlike some of the starlets who have been given a Grey shout-out and promptly denied wanting any part of the movie (ahem, Keira Knightley, Elizabeth Olsen and Selena Gomez), Gyllenhaal is up for the challenge.
As Marie Claire reports, he recently chatted with Ryan Seacrest on the host’s radio show and responded quite positively to rumors that he’s being considered for the part of the millionaire business tycoon. “That’s super-flattering. I’ve not heard that, but if that’s true, then that’s a nice thing. It’s always nice to be considered.” What a gentlemanly response. And it’s always encouraging to see an actor willing to keep an open mind, as Gyllenhaal casually added, “I mean, of course, of course I wouldn’t pass up that role.”
But can his impressive background, as well as his cute-cum-handsome appearance and his steely stare stack up to the other masculine competition for the lead role in the big-screen adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic best-selling book? Matt Bomer, Alexander Skarsgard, Ian Somerhalder and Henry Cavill all seem to have the Grey “it” factor and could be hard to beat. And Ryan Gosling may have too soft and romantic of a stereotype working for him, but his name is still frequently associated with the flick.
Gyllenhaal may have a bit of a baby face (except when it’s decked out in an overbearing, overly scruffy beard), and he perhaps is missing a bit of that fierce, brooding and powerful vibe that an actor like True Blood‘s Skarsgard or soon-to-be Superman Cavill possess. But he has proven he can thrive in a variety of roles both casual and boundaries-pushing—from romantic comedy to war drama and, well, just plain drama. And who could forget his attention-grabbing and provocative portrayal of Jack in Brokeback Mountain‘s secret cowboy love story. So maybe he really is cut out for 50 Shades of Grey. Plus, he would look good alongside Emma Watson or Alexis Bledel, two actresses rumored to maybe have a chance at the Steele role.
One thing’s certain, Gyllenhaal seems to have the right amount of passion to play the part—no Grey area there.
