The 50 Shades of Grey movie is one step closer to finding its Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
The producers of the movie have said again and again that there will be no official casting news until the screenplay gets written, and up until now the film hasn’t even had a screenwriter. Many favorites for the role of Christian like Matt Bomer and Alexander Skarsgard have disappointed fans by saying that they won’t decide if they want to audition for the movie until they read the screenplay.
Soon that very important document will finally exist thanks to 38-year-old screenwriter Kelly Marcel. Producers probably made a smart move signing on a female writer since the Fifty books were written from a female point of view, and Bomer fans will definitely be relieved that American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis didn’t get the job after he complained that Matt is too gay to play Christian Grey.
Kelly’s screenwriting resume is pretty slim. She worked on the Jurassic Park-like TV series Terra Nova, which was cancelled after one season. However, her star is on the rise now that her screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks is being turned into a movie. It stars big names like Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson and focuses on Walt Disney’s pursuit of the film rights to the book Mary Poppins.
According to the L.A. Times, here’s what 50 Shades of Grey movie producer Dana Brunetti said about Kelly Marcel:
“We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly’s engagement with the characters and world E. L. James has created, and we knew she was the right person to augment our ‘Fifty Shades’ family.”
Only time will tell if Kelly is better at writing about spankings and other “kinky f**kery” than she is at penning stories about futuristic fights and dinosaur bites.
Kelly also has a connection to one of the favorites for the role of Christian Grey—The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy. He doesn’t have as big of a Fifty fan base as Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder, and Alexander Skargard, but there are lots of ladies who picture him as the master of their Red Room of Pain. Kelly and Hardy formed a theater company after working on a few projects together, so perhaps Kelly will try to talk the 50 Shades producers into giving her business partner a chance to audition.
Tom Hardy proved that he can be dominant as The Dark Knight Rises villain Bain, and that crazy mask he wore in the movie definitely had a BDSM quality to it.
So are you happy with the screenwriter choice, and do you think that Hardy would make the perfect Christian Grey?
