As the rumors continue to crank into overdrive about which handsome hunk and PYT will play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the 50 Shades of Grey movie, the best-selling book’s author E.L. James has meanwhile scooped up quite the prize. No, she didn’t just confirm some hot actor like Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill or Alexander Skarsgard for the Grey role, but she did win big at the UK’s National Book Awards.
Hosted earlier this week on Tuesday, Dec. 4, the awards highlighted James’ boundaries-pushing, risque read as the most popular fiction book of the year—and it’s not hard to see why. Fifty Shades has captured international and celebrity attention, and has even influenced trends, holiday gifts, advertising campaigns and more. And, of course, the buzz about the movie and its potential cast has heated up the gossip news sites at a fiery clip.
“The award recognizes the massive impact 50 Shades of Grey has made this year; the blockbusting title undoubtedly whipped up quite a stir from the publishing industry, media and consumers alike,” said the prize’s organizers. As Books & Review confirms, the “most-popular” award is given after 750 book industry experts vote to honor “an adult book of commercial fiction from a UK author, which has made a massive impact; a success in all book selling outlets, a book that may have exceeded expectations, a bestseller.”
So, of course, Grey just had to grab the honor. Despite its questionable writing style and its provocative content, there’s absolutely no question that its popularity and buzz-worthiness is unmatched and nearly unprecedented.
But, while James’ written work may be racking up the awards, it remains to be seen whether the upcoming film will be honored in the same way. Somehow, it just doesn’t seem like an Oscar contender…
