A new trend

Many of small children in NYC are in the care of nannies during the day.  Many of these nannies, at least the ones on the upper West Side of Manhattan are Spanish speaking.

What I’ve noticed more this year than ever before is that the nannies speak in Spanish to their charges.  It’s an interesting way to ensure that the kids grow up bilingual even if both parents only speak English.

Often I’ve noticed that the children respond in English, yet the nanny perserveres and continues the conversation in her native tongue.

Does this happen in other cities?  If you’re a parent, how do you feel about this process?
