A Package for Caregiving

(with thanks to the I AM man)

the 24/7 question;

 package for on going respite cares

I am not

I am not

That is a lot

of not

The ID of Not

I Not

ID   I   OT

His is the package

I would like to be able to say

I am woman I am strong

And let’s get creative

With the package

And you give me

the space of my own home;

not me trotting of

somewhere else

for the break

while someone invades my space

Let me get to know myself again

In my own home in my own time

Let him have a little respite …  elsewhere

In a manner that is not invasive

This madam is not

what is meant

when speaking of creative accounting

rest home style

non non ACC

But his is the package

I am Not

ID   I   OT

And this is how painful it can sometimes feel to be care-giving full-time.

The poem above was written at a time when things were really difficult after 10 years of caregiving. This was something experimental I did at the time. It wasn’t all bad but I’m glad I wrote both sides of how it was at the time. I felt sidelined for sure. Not sure how the format will come out. Sometimes it takes courage to write with honesty, especially when you truly love that person. ACC is a commission set up in N.Z. to offer caregiving and financial support to people who have had accidents. My husband’s was a medical misadventure. Other poems of mine in Gather deal with this topic – often.
