The Academy of Country Music Awards were held Sunday night, and one of the highlights was Toby Keith and his performance of Cryin For Me, a song he wrote in honor of fallen friend and former NBA player Wayman Tisdale, who died of cancer.

Tisdale was also an accomplished jazz bassist, according to All Access Music Group.

Tisdale was a superstar at Oklahoma and had a solid NBA career but passed away last year after complications from cancer. I believe he had one of his legs amputated prior to his passing, also due to the disease.

So Keith created the musical tribute, which featured jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, according to CMT news. The website also reports that audio and video downloads of the performance will be available on iTunes, and all proceeds will benefit Stand Up to Cancer, which is ACM’s charity this year.

It’s a moving tribute between friends, and something most people wouldn’t have the opportunity to do for a loved one. To have a stage as big as that, on a show broadcast nationwide and probably beyond, it’s a touching gesture.

Good for Keith for honoring his friend’s memory and legacy.
