A lot of people don’t realize that Adam Lambert had a respectable career before he auditioned for Season 8 of American Idol. You may not have heard about him prior to his awesome audition, where he sang Crazy and Bohemian Rhapsody, blowing the judges away, but he worked in musical theatre. He had contracts, insurance, security, but he gave all of that up to audition for the singing talent show.

Adam Lambert 2010 GLAAD Media Awards 2Lambert recently gave an interview with the UK-based magazine, Q, where he talked about, among other things, his American Idol days and why he decided to audition. He told the magazine that trying out for the show was risky (as he had to give up said contracts), but the potential reward was huge.

Lambert said, “It’s a huge platform, that’s why I did it. There’s nothing like it, you can’t buy PR like it.”

Obviously, he’s right. Idol gave him a name and allowed him to reach people who otherwise may have never known this glam rocker. Each week, he came to the stage bringing his own unique twist to each of the songs he performed. Fans tuned in to see what Lambert would do next and, ironically, Lambert says that was his strategy.

He told the magazine, “My big strategy was to do something totally different each week to keep people guessing and do something that’s the opposite to all the other performers so you get the attention.”

He got plenty of both positive and negative attention, but at the end of the day, it was still attention and people were talking about him. Whether they were discussing his bizarre rendition of Ring of Fire for Grand Ole Opry week or his celebrated performance of Mad World, people talked.

Lambert made it all the way to the finale and even though he didn’t win, he has still had a successful career. Fans are currently waiting the release of his new album Trespassing, which was recently pushed back and should be out by May. Lambert recently announced that he would indeed collaborate with Bruno Mars for the album (as rumored.)

Adam Lambert has a dedicated fan base, many who have followed him since his Idol days and it is safe to assume that they won’t mind waiting a little bit longer for his new album.
