Last night on NBC’s The Sing-Off, a cappella group “Delilah” covered Adam Lambert’s hit single, “Whataya Want From Me.” Their rendition of the song was beautiful, wowing both the audience and the judges. For those who have not seen the show, The Sing-Off is a reality competition series of a cappella groups. The groups are competing for America’s vote to win a Sony Music recording contract and $200,000. Monday marked the second week of the third season of the show. In the process of praising the group, one of the judges (probably unintentionally) insulted Adam a little when he said, “We understood the song. In fact, I’ve heard this song a million times, but I understood it better that time than I had the million times before.” This happened once before when the same song was performed on NBC’s The Voice. The judge, Adam Levine, enraged Adam Lambert’s fans when he said, “I’m pretty sure that, although I haven’t heard that song before, that you probably sang it better than the person that sang it originally.”

Why is it that the judges of these singing competitions cannot just praise the contestants without criticizing the original artist in the process? Fortunately, the public disagrees, given that Adam has had huge success with the song, reaching as high as #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
