‘Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America’ Recap: ‘West’

Fans across America know the name, and now “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America” is another series from the “Man vs. Food” guy who has traveled across America to eat gluttonous amounts of food in contests that could only make any foodaholic jealous. Now Adam plays referee to a different locality each week, as they vie for the title of America’s best sandwich on the Travel Channel.

On this episode titled “West”, Adam visits three different sandwiches, in Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, California, to see which one will win the regional title.

In Los Angeles, at JR’s Barbeque, Adam got the recommended Pulled Pork Barbeque Sandwich. Run by a mother and son duo of Jeannie and Robert Johnson from Memphis, they make a pulled pork sandwich using a grilled brioche bun with coleslaw using maple syrup and pineapple sauce. The pork butt rubbed with their 13-spice dry rub, smokes for 13 hours and is gently pulled apart for the creation. The coleslaw gets its sweetness from the maple syrup and pineapple, added to the green and red cabbage and carrots. Then adding mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and poppy seeds it becomes a dream on bread and then topped with their special barbeque sauce; the creation is a masterpiece.

Then on to San Diego to Phil’s BBQ to meet owner Phil Pace to taste the El Toro, a tri-tip beef sandwich using roasted beef with a dry rub, then double grilled and doused in Phil’s special barbeque sauce. On to a custom baked Kaiser roll goes the sky-high beef. Adam chose the El Toro Tri-tip Sandwich as the winner over the JR’s Pulled Pork.

Now to San Francisco to see if El Toro can beat out the Pulled Lamb and Watermelon Sandwich at Wexler’s. Smoked lamb with pickled watermelon rind and topped with watermelon vinaigrette. Adam visited executive chef Charlie Kleinman to see how it was made. A big lamb shoulder using a special rub and smoked using apple wood for several hours. When it is ready to fall off the bone, it is pulled and put on a deli roll, topped off with pickled watermelon rind, and watermelon vinaigrette and a side of slaw. This contrast of tastes will be hard to beat.

When it was complete, the winner of the West was the El Toro from Phil’s BBQ. With only three regions left, will it stand up among the rest of the regions? Fans will be waiting to see who will win “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America” with napkins at the ready.
