‘After Earth’ Trailer Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith: Does It Look Promising? (Video)

The trailer for After Earth debuted at the perfect time—everyone is speculating about the fate of the planet because of erroneous reports about the Mayan calendar. Even though NASA has denied that the world will end on December 21, 2012, some people are still worried about its demise.

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie isn’t another disaster flick about aliens or plants trying to wipe out the human race—it takes place 1,000 years after a doomsday event that has left the planet inhabitable by people.

Will Smith stars as a general who crash lands on the planet with his son, who is played by Will’s real-life son Jaden Smith. After 1,000 years without people, the Earth has been reclaimed by plants and animals that have “evolved to kill humans.” So the plot sounds a bit like M. Night Shyamalan’s horrible environmentally-friendly horror story The Happening—basically the Earth has realized that humans are parasites that need to be exterminated. However, Shyamalan didn’t write the screenplay for After Earth, so it could have potential.

The lush landscape in the movie is being compared to that in Avatar, but the dangerous critters that Will Smith and Jaden Smith encounter aren’t quite as creative—there are a lot of primates and a big cat that looks a bit like a saber-toothed tiger. The scariest-looking animal of the future looks like a giant spider.

Jaden gets to soar through the sky in a suit that makes him look like a flying squirrel; there are a few short scenes that show a fleet of ships attacking a small group of people; and Will and Jaden get to show off a little futuristic technology (thankfully it wasn’t all destroyed in their deadly-looking crash).

There’s no word on if the movie has a “what a twist!” moment, but Will does try to blow his son’s mind when he reveals that the strange planet they’re fighting to survive on is actually Earth.

You can check out the trailer below to see what you think—will Shyamalan finally redeem himself, or does this movie look like another disaster?

Just don’t start looking forward to the movie too much since it won’t hit theaters before December 21, 2012.
