Matt Bomer can take comfort in knowing that he’s not the only gay actor that American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has an issue with.
Ellis recently complained that he thinks that Bomer can’t play Christian Grey in the 50 Shades of Grey movie because of his sexual orientation. He has argued that he doesn’t have a problem with gay actors playing straight characters, but he thinks that whoever plays the seductive billionaire businessman should be heterosexual and has suggested porn star James Deen for the role. Needless to say, the Fifty fans rooting for Matt were not happy about his comments on the matter.
But Bret Easton Ellis wants them to know that he doesn’t just have a problem with Matt Bomer playing a straight character—he’s not a fan of Neil Patrick Harris in How I Met Your Mother, either.
According to Digital Spy, here’s what he tweeted about NPH:
“Feel complicated about Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother – central joke being that he’s a gay actor playing a… womaniser.”
“Why not cast Jason Segel in the Neil Patrick Harris role in How I Met Your Mother? [Because] the meta-joke is that Harris is openly gay. Lame…”
“You don’t think the makers of How I Met Your Mother didn’t KNOW that Neil Patrick Harris was gay and that would be part of the joke? Really?”
He then went on to say that he likes NPH and thinks that he’s a great Tony Awards host, but labeled HIMYM “a piece of crap.” He also tweeted that The Big Bang Theory is “Gayness personified.” However, no character on that show is gay—Sheldon is played by gay actor Jim Parsons, but his character has a girlfriend and is almost asexual. It’s also ridiculous and childish to insult a show by calling it gay. Ellis might be bisexual himself judging from what he said in the past, but that doesn’t make his comments any better.
And NPH’s casting as Barney in HIMYM probably wasn’t just meant to be one big gay joke—he likely got the part because of his performance as a womanizer in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. The role has helped the actor win a large legion of fiercely loyal fans, so he probably doesn’t care much about what Ellis thinks.
Ellis has probably just been ranting on and on about 50 Shades of Grey and Bomer because he’s been obsessively tweeting about the movie for weeks in hopes of being named the screenwriter of the film. He recently revealed that he’s not being considered for the job, so he’s probably feeling a bit bitter. All of this ranting is also helping the author to get a lot of attention.
So what do you think of Ellis’ take on NPH?
