Back on season four of the “Bachelorette,” Sean Ramey was sent home by DeAnna Pappas. Even though he didn’t get the final rose that time, Ramey eventually found love and now has a 3-year-old daughter. This family man also teaches life-saving skills to people of all ages. His expertise in martial arts was evident when he kicked a lemon off of Jesse Csincsak’s head during the hit reality show. He has taken that passion to help others become safe and to increase fitness levels at the same time.

In a recent interview with Ramey, he discusses what he has been up to these days.

You have a studio in Kentucky. How did that come about?

I founded Kentucky Tae Kwon Do & Fitness Academy, Inc in 1998, while attending the University of Louisville. It has now grown to over 300 families, and our facility is top-notch. We built a 5,000 sq. ft. facility in Crestwood, Kentucky complete with men and women’s dressing rooms, men and women bathrooms, showers, a mezzanine viewing area for families, private lesson room, and a play room for younger brother and sisters.

Kentucky Tae Kwon Do was rated as the United States Top 50 martial arts schools and fastest growing martial arts schools, by United Professionals; one of North America’s largest consulting group. We currently teach students from ages 4-70 years of age

When did you start taking up Martial Arts?

I started Martial arts when I was 9, and achieved my black belt in less than two years making me the youngest black belt in the association. It was actually my parents choice to enroll me in classes because they thought it would help improve my confidence. I was also very small for my age, and they knew that by middle school I had better be able to defend myself.

What skills do you teach?

We offer martial arts for all ages and abilities, Fitness Kickboxing aerobics, an Elite Olympic training program for those interested in competition, and we are in the process of implementing brazilian jiu jitsu.

How do you teach lifesaving skills, especially for women?

The Academy’s enrollment is about 50% male and 50% female which is amazing!! Most studios are lucky to have 20% of their enrollment female. It’s because of the unique style that we go about teaching women, and families in general, that allows us to retain and attract so many students. We have started opening our doors to the public more by offering a one time, hour and a half class, to spread the awareness of life saving self-defense skills. This appeals to those who have no desire or time to enroll in martial arts classes two to three times a week.

You have a new book coming out. What is it all about and when will it be available?

D.E.F.E.N.D. by Sean Ramey, A Basic Guide to Self-Defense, is going to be huge. Never before has a guide like this been introduced to the public. Other self defense systems or books, spend too much time on technique and complicated details. D.E.F.E.N.D. will be a VERY basic guide on how to avoid confrontation AND how to defend yourself and your family, if ever faced with threatening situations. Its due out before Christmas, the perfect gift for the business professional, the stay-at-home mom, or the college student!

What advice would you give to those that are looking for a Tae Kwon Do class but live outside of Kentucky?

AWARENESS is my advice to those interested in defending themselves! It’s the oldest and most effective form of self-defense out there. Awareness will save more lives than any strike, kick, or choke hold! I suggest parents go and actually watch a class at their local martial arts school and watch how the instructors interact with the students. The same applies to adults looking for classes themselves; look at the facility, how safe it is and how clean it is! We are currently the only studio that is inspected by the Health Department. We pay twice a year for the Health Dept., to grade us and inspect the safety and cleanliness of our facility! Another great selling point for us!

If you are not near a martial arts studio, buy my book! it will be all that you need!

Thank you to Sean for taking the time out of his busy schedule to play catch up since his “Bachelorette” days!
