It seems the Aishwarya Rai baby birth situation led to the Bachchans holding on to some signing money for a film they were unable to participate in. Due to that, filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi has yet to receive back the initial signing fee from the couple.
A report from Bollywood Life notes that Santoshi signed both Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan for a sum of 50 lakh for his movie “Ladies and Gentleman.” However, Aishwarya Rai’s pregnancy took priority over this, and Santoshi even admitted to that, saying, “The fact that Aishwarya and Abhishek are going to be parents is far more important than my film. But the role will no longer suit her.”
Still, this left the signing amount with the Bachchans, and Santoshi didn’t immediately demand the money back. In fact, he remained low-key over it all saying he planned to make a new movie with the Bachchans at some point. If that’s the case, then they might just be able to hold onto the money.
Bollywood Life wisely points out that Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan should kindly repay the filmmaker. They never did the original project, so it seems only fair. However, they have a lot to deal with right now including caring for Beti B and now worrying about the health of Amitabh Bachchan who is in the hospital getting treatment.
One has to give filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi a lot of credit for keeping his cool and not making a big issue of something like this. That will go a long way towards other big-name stars working with him in the future. However, he may want to work on the contract wording so he can get his money back in case the stars don’t end up working with him.
