“Welcome to Alcatraz.”

Not so ominous when a tour guide says it, but when it’s aimed at San Francisco detective Rebecca Madsen, it’s worrisome. Madsen has inadvertently uncovered a mystery that dates back more than fifty years, and you can bet that there are people with a stake in keeping it all under wraps.

Alcatraz, the new mystery series from J.J. Abrams, premieres tonight on Fox, and you won’t want to miss a single second.

It all begins when Madsen finds the fingerprint of a long-dead prisoner at the scene of a homicide. Her grandfather and uncle (Robert Forrester) were both guards at Alcatraz, where the man was incarcerated, so she finds the puzzle even more intriguing than most. Enter tight-lipped government agent Hauser (Sam Neil), who wants to stop her and Alcatraz expert and comic nerd Soto, (Jorge Garcia) who wants to help her, and it’s a two-hour wild ride.

When it comes to an end, be sure to check back at Fox.com for their online companion, Legends of Alcatraz. You might also find more clues to the mystery at Doc’s Comic Book Tumblr blog. This is a J.J. Abrams show after all, so the clues will be scattered everywhere for you to find.

Can you unravel the mystery of The Rock before Detective Madsen does? Or more importantly, before Fox decides to pull the plug on this complicated series?

Here’s a look at tonight’s season première of Alcatraz:
