The American Music Awards, or AMA, red carpet and telecast, featured some of today’s biggest stars strutting their stuff in a variety of fashions. Some stars hit style home runs while others merited at least an eyebrow quirk for awkwardness. Luckily for the stars who made a fashion misstep, the early 2012 award show season will descend soon and obscure the bad choices made at the end of 2011.
The Daily Mail contains a solid breakdown of AMA fashions featuring numerous red carpet snapshots of all the big stars. Taylor Swift was cute as always but managed to stick to her tried-and-true neutral color palette in a gold Reem Acra dress. Pal Selena Gomez, who also sat next to Taylor throughout the telecast, had the corner on sexy, gold gowns for the evening with her deep v-neck dress with a front split that showed off her gams.
Katy Perry continued mixing vivid pink hair with Oriental flavor in a pink geisha-inspired number with electric blue heels. Her make-up was stunning when coupled with the gown’s shading. Perry donned a different pink wig to perform “The One That Got Away” in a structured, wide, padded-shoudler dress in a vivid pink. Other artists who looked killer on stage included Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Clarkson.
Kelly Clarkson shimmied into a form-fitting red sequined number for a performance of “Mr. Know It All” from her Stronger album while Jennifer Lopez showed off her figure in three different ensembles. She started out in a Giambattista Valli gown that she shed to reveal a sexy tropical inspired number with lots of saucy fringe while singing “Papi.” She then stripped this outfit to dance in a flesh-colored bodysuit bedecked in jewels. She was definitely the performance sex kitten of the evening! J.Lo pulled her hair back tight and changed into a one-shoulder gown featuring black lace detailing to accept the award for the best Latin artist of the year.
Nicki Minaj looked as awesome as J.Lo when she accepted her awards. Nicki teetered across the stage in mile-high heels that were so strut impeding that help from assistants and a slow-pace couldn’t save her from stumbling briefly. However, the full green skirt she topped with a lacy black tank showed off Nicki’s original style while still being relatable. Jenny McCarthy also looked very swift when she introduced will.i.am and Jennifer Lopez’s number in a plum mini-dress with a puffed out skirt. She was definitely the best-dressed non-musical artist in attendance!
On the not-so-spiffy side of swift was Justin Bieber in the white and red sport-inspired suit that he wore while performing his Christmas single “Mistletoe.” In the early 2000s, maybe it would have worked. Of course, anyone would look a bit silly in an ordinary athletic inspired outfit after will.i.am and J.Lo killed it in glow-in-the-dark ensembles during their number. Christina Aguilera also chose another unfortunate form-fitting mini-gown while accompanying Maroon 5 for the hit “Moves Like Jagger.” The pop star really isn’t huge, but she wears clothes that accent every last pound on her frame, and it just doesn’t look good.
All and all the night basically featured a lot of fashion masterpieces. Only a few artists really stumbled. Who do you think looked the best?
