The Americ-NYAN cat video was an instant hit on YouTube today, celebrating Independence Day NYAN-can style. This latest patriotic NYAN-cat video went up on You Tube just before midnight on July 3 and has already received more than 38,000 views and sparked almost 300 comments.

For those who don’t know about the NYAN-cat videos, here is a bit of NYAN-cat history.

From knowyourmeme.com on the original version: “Nyan Cat, also known as Pop Tart Cat, is an 8-bit animation depicting a cat with the body of a cherry pop tart flying through outer space. While such absurd themes like flying kittens and pastry cats have been around for some time, the surreal humor behind this particular combination has captivated YouTubers and online art communities.”

What’s especially funny about the NYAN-cat videos is that nothing really happens in them. There’s a Pop Tart cat dressed in a specifically themed Pop Tart that “nyanyan’s” (japanese for “meow”) to music for about 3 minutes. That’s it, yet these videos have such a following, it’s incredible!

In the case of the Americ-NYAN cat video, the cat has a blue Pop Tart body and an American Flag coming out from its tail end. This cat does not “nyanya,” a complaint of some in the comment feed, but it instead is moving to a synthesized version of John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” For three whole minutes, that’s all it does. Yet, in just two hours today, the video has gone from 15,000 likes to 38,000. People clearly love the Americ-NYAN cat, for whatever reason.

The Pop Tart Cat video was first posted on April 2, 2011 on LOL-COMICS, a daily comics site run by prguitarman. “The GIF animation was also reblogged via Tumblr on April 2nd, 2011, accumulating over 3,000 notes (likes & reblogs) in its first two weeks.”
