When American Idol 2012 continued April 18, the top 7 were tasked with singing two songs each, one from the past decade, and one inspired by the character of Soul Train. Humble Georgia native Phillip Phillips was solid all night long, but his round two rendition of Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” made judge Jennifer Lopez want to get up and dance.
Phillip hit the stage with nothing but a microphone, a distinct departure from his usual guitar-clutching stance. Not a departure from the norm was his understated wardrobe selection that featured his trademark grey shirt, this time tucked under a black jacket. He was super animated, and his usual unusual facial expressions were out and active in overdrive. But the woman in the audience loved it, and so did the judging trio.
Randy Jackson declared “yo man, Phillip Phillips in the house!” He praised him for letting the song “breathe” and for taking his time. Jennifer Lopez loved on his “feeling” and “soul” and said she wanted to get up and dance with him. Steven Tyler called him “brilliantly awkward” and “beautiful”.
Might Phillip be the one to get the boot from American Idol 2012 at the close of the elimination hour tonight? If the judges’ glowing remarks are any indicator of America’s voting trends, no way. But you can never be sure how things will play out. Tune in to FOX at 8 PM to find out.
