The American Idol 2012 top 11 became the top 10 on March 15 as hopeful Shannon Magrane of Florida was booted from the competition. Read on for a full recap of the hour’s action.
Host Ryan Seacrest kicked off the show by welcoming the remaining contestants and sharing some photos from Jennifer Lopez’s recent Vogue photo shoot. He glossed over ousted finalist Jermaine Jones’ exit, and confirmed that by hour’s end, one contestant would indeed be eliminated from the competition and left out of the Idol Summer tour. Shortly thereafter, the week’s Ford music video aired. It featured the top 12–including Jermaine–as they explored a haunted house.
With the first segment out of the way, Ryan commenced the elimination action by summoning Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone and Joshua Ledet to center stage. As each contestant’s performance was recapped, Jimmy Iovine shared his impressions of their work. Jimmy was “really proud” of Phillip, and thought that Skylar would continue on in the competition despite a weak song choice. He thought Elise “owned” her song and said she’d “captivated” him with her work. Joshua too earned praised for his rendition of “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Star of the week Joshua was first to join the top 10, followed by Phillip and Skylar. Elise, however, found herself in the bottom three.
Though five contestants still eagerly awaited more elimination news, an entertainment break ensued as pop star Demi Lovato emerged to sing her latest single, “Give Your Heart a Break.”
Following a break, Ryan called Colton Dixon, Shannon Magrane, DeAndre Brackensick and Jessica Sanchez forward for more results. Jimmy defended DeAndre’s song pick, but worried that he would be in trouble following a lackluster delivery. He predicted that Colton would be safe middle of the pack style, but worried that Shannon had pushed herself too hard. He defended Jessica vigorously, asserting “if she goes home, we should all go home.” Colton was first to be deemed safe, followed by Jessica and DeAndre. Shannon joined Elise in the bottom three.
With eight down and three to go, American Idol season 5 alum Chris Daughtry returned to debut his new single, “Outta My Head.”
Following Daughtry’s return, Ryan called Hollie Cavanagh, Heejun Han and Erika Van Pelt to the stage. Jimmy gave Hollie “straight As” and predicted she’d be “great in this competition” though he disliked her outfit. He hoped Heejun would “find some tempo” down the line, and thought that Erika had oversung her tune. Hollie and Heejun were named to the top 10, leaving Erika to join Elise and Shannon in the bottom three.
Jennifer and Steven were both unhappy seeing Elise in the bottom three, and fortunately for them, she was quickly sent to join the contestants previously named to the top 10. After the requisite dramatic pause, Erika was named to the top 10, leaving Shannon to sing for her life in an attempt to snag the judges’ sole save of the season.
But it wasn’t meant to be: Shortly following her second rendition of “One Sweet Day,” Randy Jackson spoke on behalf of all three judges as he shared that they weren’t going to save her from elimination. The teen was gracious in defeat, thanking her fans for their loyalty and the judges for their weeks of honest feedback.
Did America get it right? Probably. With strong contenders like Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh and Jessica Sanchez in the mix, Shannon’s pipes were bound to pale in comparison down the line.
