Following a night of largely so-so performances from the top 11, the next American Idol 2012 results show is scheduled to air this evening on FOX. But will anyone actually get the axe? It’s hard to say.
The March 14 edition of the reality singing competition was originally slated to feature the top 12, but reinstated wild card contestant Jermaine Jones’ unexpected disqualification dropped the field to the top 11 shortly before the performances commenced.
There were certainly boot-worthy numbers in the mix. Heejun Han’s rendition of the 1989 Richard Marx hit “Right Here Waiting” drew criticism from Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler. The trio also quasi-panned youngster Jessica Sanchez’s song choice — 1995’s “Turn the Beat Around.” San Jose, Calif. native DeAndre Brackensick also took some heat for singing 1994’s Lionel Richie/Diana Ross collaboration “Endless Love.”
Finally, although she earned praise for tackling the Mariah Carey hit “One Sweet Day,” 16-year old Shannon Magrane’s performance clearly didn’t hit all the right notes for everything. For the second week running, VotefortheWorst.com named her as its contestant of choice, justifying the selection with some harsh words: “Shannon isn’t a very good singer and clearly has no idea how bad she is.”
Given that the guest performers are booked –including Idol alum Chris Daughtry and Demi Lovato– it makes sense that the show will go on. But it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the contestant who receives the lowest number of votes is granted a stay of elimination heading into next week.
The American Idol 2012 top 11 results show airs Thursday night at 8 PM on FOX.
