‘American Idol’ 2012 Top 13 Recap — Shannon Magrane Hits a Sour Note, Danger Looms?

American Idol 2012’s top 13 singers took to the stage March 7 to wow America with a collection of Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder hits. Despite good intentions and plenty of potential, Florida’s Shannon Magrane hit more than a few sour notes. Here’s a look back at her performance.

Shannon’s troubles were foreshadowed during her rehearsal meeting with guest mentor Mary J. Blige and producer Jimmy Iovine. Although Jimmy appreciated her vocal stylings, Mary worried that she was “thinking” too much to be able to “feel it” and deliver a good show.

The uber tall 16-year-old Shannon took to the stage in shiny black pants, a black jacket, a colorful shirt and heels. Unfortunately, her rendition of “I Have Nothing” wasn’t the best performance of the evening; her voice cracked more than once, and the tone just wasn’t spot-on like it needed to be at this stage of the American Idol competition.

Jennifer Lopez didn’t hide her disappointment as she told Shannon, “the thinking got the best of you.” She encouraged her to just “tell the story” next time. Steven Tyler suspected that her “nerves” had gotten the best of her and said that she’d “crashed and burned” at times. Randy Jackson agreed that nerves were in control, and said “it wasn’t great tonight.”

Shannon said she was focusing on herself and agreed with the judges’ comments that nerves had gotten the best of her. Still, she promised to “shake it off” and move on.

Shannon Magrane will move on, that is, if American Idol 2012 voters decide to save her. To see if she advances to next week’s top 12, watch the March 8 results show on FOX.
