‘American Idol’: Jessica Sanchez Sings ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Dance With My Father’

For Queen night on American Idol, Jessica S├ínchez went right for the biggest song. Unfortunately, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is also very complex. Her opening of “Mama, I just killed a man…” was spot on. However, the uptempo part fell flat a bit. It was well sung, but lacking the energy the song demands. The visuals were very interesting, opening in black and white, complete with the multi-headed vocal graphic. Then, transitioning back to color. The rock interlude that is key to the song was too short as it is not her style. However, the “anyway the wind blows” closing was perfectly delicate. Hopefully Jessica can withstand the crazy song editing that was a bit disjointed.

Her contestant’s choice was Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father,” which could be a mistake. She was told by the judges to pick younger songs, but this was not that. And not the best ode to your father for a 16-year-old, despite her touching military family story. It was sung excellently, but she is stalling in an American Idol competition where she can ill-afford to not be perfect. Will she advance to the top five or is Jessica’s time on Idol over?
