Angelina Jolie Goes Bilingual for Directorial Debut

Actress-turned-director Angelina Jolie says that her directorial debut movie, In the Land of Blood and Honey, was shot in English, Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian languages. The actress’s decision to do this allows it to be accessible to as many people as possible. The actress did this by doubling the scenes in a variety of languages. Seems she went all the way for her first, and rightfully so.

This would market the film without being biased to one audience. Plus it saves some time not having to worry about reading through the dreaded subtitles.

ContactMusic reports her stating to Entertainment Weekly magazine, “I personally like movies being told and lived as they actually were.”

This is important because films of this caliber, which are based on critical events in history, are always expected to maintain some level of loyalty to the actual experience, minus the Hollywood fluff. These films are obligated to register with a certain level of authenticity for audiences who are familiar (or even lived) through those events. Jolie is definitely no stranger to this because that is exactly what she will give audiences as she centers the love story between a Serbian man and Bosnian woman around the real-life Balken wars.

Another very popular film, Titanic, used “the love story in the midst of a tragedy” formula, and to this day, it is still one of the best movies of its time.

The film, which is based on an original screenplay written by Jolie, is set to be released on December 23, 2011.

The Bosnian war love story should be a grand evolution of Angelina Jolie’s work in film. Not only this, it helps to serve purpose for her humanitarian work, by spreading awareness of other’s plights from around the world.
