The Coast Guard is reporting the explosion of yet another oil rig in the Gulf Of Mexico with a sheenÂ of oil over a mile long spreading on the surfaceÂ about 200 miles west of the BP rig that is still being plugged and 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana. At about 11am this morning, local stations in Louisiana started reporting the explosion of a rig owned by Mariner Energy, saying it was still on fire. Â There are reported to be 13 men on the Vermilion Oil production platform 380 rig and now 12 are in the water wearing survival suits, and one is missing. Five rescue helicopters are at the scene and at least one vessel is in route. According to the Coast Guard Two fixed-wing planes and two cutter ships are also responding.Injured workers are being taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma, La. officials have said.
Mariner Energy says they focus on oil and gas exploration and production, They have headquartered in Houston and has an office in Lafayette, La. Their web sire claims the company engages in deepwater drilling in the gulf, including “higher-risk, high-impact projects that have the potential to create substantial value for our stockholders.” Itâ€™s beginning to look as the company may have money leak in progress right now.
