A mass border crossing was attempted this week, resulting in the injuries of several border patrol agents who were pelted with rocks and plastic bottles filled with water.
Ted Hessen from Fusion reported that it happened “near the San Ysidro port of entry in California.” The effort was organized and started with a flyer being handed out “at the Padre Chava breakfast hall for migrants and deportees in Tijuana,” according to a local San Diego news source, KPBS on Tuesday.
The flyer was “rambling” and ended with “Sí se puede!” written three times, a rallying cry for illegal immigrants.
Richard Marosi of the LA Times wrote that “several agents were hit in the arms and legs with rocks and one agent was hit in the head with a filled water bottle…” Where is the mainstream media on this story? After all, immigration reform is all over the news lately. Is this not newsworthy?
The tactic of swarming the border was common in the early 1990’s, not long after Ronald Reagan passed the failed Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. The current proposals being reviewed by the federal government have the same components of Reagan’s failed legislation, as reported by Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post.
It is unclear why Reagan’s legislation was not followed, particularly the requirement to fine employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. It is also unclear why new legislation is needed, which will basically be the same as the 1986 “reforms”. Why not update the 1986 legislation and actually enforce it?
The mass border crossing attempts are hopefully not a sign of things to come.
