Two Australian radio hosts have suspended themselves from their jobs at 2Day FM. The move comes after the nurse, who was made an unwilling participant in a prank phone call concerning Kate Middleton, killed herself. Mel Greig and Michael Christian have become two of the most despised people in the world after their royal prank resulted in tragedy.
Since the news of Jacintha Saldanha’s death made headlines, the DJs deleted their Twitter accounts, which were inundated with messages of hate, disgust and so on. In a new statement from the hosts and the station, the pranksters express their condolences to the nurse’s family.
“SCA and 2Day Fm are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward Vii’s Hospital. SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.”
The radio station is left scrambling after a petition began circulating demanding the pair be fired and the public is calling for a boycott of the show. There are very few people who will be willing to listen to these guys ever again. They may have suspended themselves, but their prank may also border on illegal. According to Matthew Keys of Reuters, the duo may be in hot water with the Australian radio code of practice. One of the codes bans the treatment of “participants in live hosted entertainment programs in a highly demeaning or highly exploitative manner.”
Greig and Christian are reportedly “deeply shocked” their joke ended up with a woman taking her own life. Obviously, that was not their intent and the Australian radio hosts are probably feeling like the scum of the earth right now, but they also must realize the power they wield with their jobs in the media. Why would they think it was funny to even do such a thing? They are not adolescents and should have known better. Kate left the hospital the day after the prank call and it may have been due to the breach in privacy. Quite frankly, the stupid prank call wasn’t even funny.
What do you think should happen to the shamed DJs?
