Jennifer Lawrence may have snagged the lead role of heroine Katniss Everdeen in Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games” trilogy by proving her acting chops to director Gary Ross, but there’s one group she still needs to prove herself to, and that’s the fans of the series.
Fans of the immensely popular “Hunger Games” novels are outraged over the casting of Jennifer Lawrence, but is it for all the wrong reasons? Most of the backlash has focused on Lawrence’s physical attributes, namely her ivory skin and golden hair, overlooking that she was, in fact, an Oscar-nominee this past year for the Indie film, Winter’s Bone, which was met with great critical acclaim.
Though Jennifer Lawrence is clearly not physically what Collins had in mind when she wrote the fantasy series, chances are that she is the caliber of actress that the author would like to play Everdeen, whose character proves both exceptionally deep and volatile throughout the series. And physical attributes can be masked, can they not? Many an everyday person is walking around with a hair and/or eye color different than the one they were born with, so really, what’s the big deal?
It still remains to be seen, though, how wide-reaching an effect the fans backlash is. Could it be that they’ll boycott the movie? Doubtful, given how highly anticipated the film adaptation is. Then again, when changes are made – especially of this manner – to beloved novels when they’re adapted to film, it’s anyone’s guess how the masses will take it.
What do you think about the casting of Jennifer Lawrence? The fans’ reactions?
