Barney Frank, 71-year-old congressman from Massachusetts, has announced plans to marry his long time partner, Jim Ready. The 42-year-old from Ogunquit, Maine, has been with Frank since 2007. He owns a small handyman business.
Frank plans to retire from congress at the end of his term in 2013, and it is unclear if the wedding will take place before or after that date. At 71, perhaps Barney should opt for the sooner. As Rosalind Russell, aka “Mame,” said about waiting, “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.”
Barney Frank said on The Charlie Rose Show that he is looking forward to his retirement and spending time with Ready.
“Look, I have a partner now, Jim Ready; I have an emotional attachment. I’m in love for the first time in my life.”
The couple will be married in Massachusetts, reports Yahoo News, where gay marriage is legal, but Ready will not be eligible for benefits extended to other spouses because Frank is a federal employee.
Ready had a scrape with the law in August of 2007, when he was charged with marijuana cultivation, but the charge was dropped after he admitted to civil possession. Frank was at Ready’s house at the time of the arrest, but said he never saw any pot, and never smoked any.
Barney Frank has represented the Massachusetts 4th District since 1981, and is retiring because of changes in the district which would force him to spend too much time campaigning.
No date has been set, but come on, Barney. May-December romances don’t last forever, and you said it yourself, “I’m in love for the first time in my life.”
