Binders Full of Women: Why Mitt Romney’s Comment Went Viral

Mitt Romney’s off-color ‘binders full of women’ comment has gone viral, taking on a life of its own and generating a slew of internet memes, Twitter followers, criticism and jokes alike. Some speculate that it could even hurt him in the election after he reportedly gained the support of some female voters. Was it merely a harmless wording malfunction or did it show how out-of-touch he really is?

In case you missed the hilarity, the comment came during the second presidential debate between Romney and Obama when the two candidates were discussing women’s issues. Romney said he learned all about pay inequality between genders while building his cabinet. In his speech, he said that he told his staff: “Well, can’t we—can’t we find some—some women that are…qualified?’ And—and so we—we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women’s groups and said: ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”

Wow–whole binders of qualified women! Who would have thought it, eh Romney? The #bindersfullofwomen became a trending topic on Twitter and got its on Facebook page with 200,000 fans the first night. The comment went viral because it sounds hilarious, but it also makes Romney look like an idiot. The unfortunate thing for him is that he may not be able to back it up, according to a women’s group called MassGAP. Maybe they’re just bitter that they weren’t in those fabled binders. Check out the funniest memes on the topic here.
