The one boxing match that everyone wants to see – Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. – once again looks like it will not happen. Bob Arnum, chairman of Top Rank, announced that no deal had been made for Pacquiao to fight Mayweather Jr. Top Rank had imposed a deadline for 11:59 pm Friday for Mayweather Jr. to accept an offer to fight Pacquiao. Now, Arnum is moving onto creating another fight for Pacquiao. It is a shame that the two best boxers in the world cannot reach an agreement to fight each other. The fight would be great for the two boxers, for promoters, for the sport of boxing and most of all, the fans. It does not make any sense as to why Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. cannot get their act together. Just shows why so many people are turning away from boxing. Why watch a sport where the best do not fight each other?
If Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao were to fight, it is speculated that the fight would get three million pay-per-view purchases and each fighter would get at least $40 million. Mayweather Jr. has been unusually quiet in all of this. His reasoning for not wanting the fight are unknown at this point because he has been silent for months. The last time Mayweather and Pacquiao were discussing a fight, Mayweather wanted Pacquiao to take a drug test. Pacquiao refused, but has not stated he would be willing to take any tests. Now, there is no reason left for Mayweather to refuse the fight. Pacquiao will instead have to fight Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito. Both are good fighters, but would not in the class of Mayweather. Maybe there will be a last minute miracle where Mayweather accepts the fight before Pacquiao makes an agreement with Cottor or Margarito. I doubt it so boxing fans will have to wait until at least 2010 for a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight.
