In the Breeders’ Cup Classic 2011 results, Drosselmeyer has become the official winner of the big $5 million race at Churchill Downs! In a major upset at the race and of potential history, the 15-to-1 odds to win horse came out of nowhere in the final stretch of the race, edging out Game on Dude who had been leading most of the way.
It was almost a historic day in today’s Breeders’ Cup results, which nearly saw the first-ever female jockey win the race in Louisville, Kentucky. One of the stories, as noted by the commentators on today’s ESPN televised Breeders’ Cup coverage, was Drosselmeyer jockey Mike Smith pulled off the upset. Not only that, they noted that he defeated his ex-girlfriend, Chantal Sutherland, a competing female jockey in today’s race.
New York Times reports that Chantal Sutherland just missed history as she was riding Game on Dude, the leader most of the way. They note that Mike Smith is a Hall of Famer and took home his 15th Breeders’ Cup victory today. Drosselmeyer was trained by Bill Mott and was 15-1 odds prior to the race.
For the win it was #3 Drosselmeyer, followed by #8 Game on Dude (Place), and #4 Ruler on Ice (Show). According to ESPN’s televised coverage a $2 trifecta wager placed on those 3 horses in that order payed out $5,427, with a $2 bet on the exact finish of the top 4 horses paying out $47,631.80. Not a bad day at the races for Mike Smith and Drosselmeyer, but an unfortunate one for Chantal Sutherland who almost made history!
