During the week leading up to the MTV VMA’s, there was a lot of speculation about what outfit Lady Gaga would wear, if Katy Perry would finally win a Moonman(she did), and of course, the highly anticipated Britney Spears tribute.
The biggest rumor was that an array of singers including Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Janet Jackson, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj would be paying tribute to the pop princess by singing some of her biggest hits. That rumor took a big hit when Selena Gomez flatly denied any involvement in the supposed event.
The tribute opened with Lady Gaga dressed (again) as her alter ego Jo Calderone talking about Britney and her career. The musical performance opened with dancers in the school girl outfits which Britney wore in her “…Baby, One More Time” video and dancing along to the song. It immediately went into rendition of “Oops! I Did It Again” complete with the matching outfits in choreography. Bits of “Crazy,” “Toxic,” “Circus” were also performed. At the end, Jo Calderone presented Britney with the 2011 Michal Jackson Video Vanguard Award. When Britney went on stage, she and Jo shared a couple of looks and acted like they may kiss, but at the last moment, Britney turned away laughing saying that she had already done that. She was referring to the 2003 MTV VMA’s where she shared a kiss with Madonna.
After Britney’s acceptance, Beyoncé took the stage to perform. CBS News also covered the Britney tribute.
What did you think of the Britney tribute? Though the rumored performance would have been amazing, it is best to be saved for when Britney receives a bigger award.
