California Bans Tanning Bed Use for Minors

Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a bill which will make it illegal for minors to use a tanning bed in the Golden State. Current law forbids anyone under the age of 14 from using indoor tanning devices. Minors between the ages of 14 and 18 have been allowed to use tanning beds with parental consent. That will no longer be the case under the new law. Only people 18 and older will be permitted.

“I praise Gov. Brown for his courage in taking this much-needed step to protect some of California’s most vulnerable residents — our kids — from what the ‘House of Medicine’ has conclusively shown is lethally dangerous: ultraviolet-emitting radiation from tanning beds,” state Senator Ted Lieu, the bill’s sponsor, wrote in a statement.

The California law is the most restrictive in the country, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It will take effect on January 1, 2012. While California is known as a more liberal-leaning state, even conservative states such as Texas have restricted tanning bed use for minors. In that state the ban applies to minors under the age of 16.
