“Captain America: The First Avenger” was one of the summer’s superhero success stories, so it’s not surprising the film’s release on DVD and Blu-ray is eagerly anticipated. The good news is that the home video version hits store shelves next month. The better news (for comics geeks especially) is that the DVD will feature some behind-the-scenes peeks at “The Avengers” movie.
The Captain America DVD and Blu-ray trailer previews a lot of the features you’ll find on the home video version. There’s a snippet of an all-new short film that stars SHIELD Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) showing off some serious fighting skills. Aside from Nick Fury, Coulson is best known as one of the characters who connects all the Marvel movies leading to the Avengers. The short film should fill in a few gaps between the preceding superhero flicks.
Of course, the First Avenger himself isn’t forgotten in all this. DVD featurettes will include how they digitally planted star Chris Evans’ noggin on the body of a skinny stand-in; that’s almost worth the price of admission. You’ll also get deleted scenes, details on how they framed the great action set pieces, secrets of the shield, and background info about the Red Skull.
Look closely at the Captain America DVD trailer and you’ll briefly spot some “Avengers” footage featuring director Joss Whedon’s first day on the set. You’ll also glimpse Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Tony Stark, and Steve Rogers/Cap. While plenty of Cap fans where going to buy the DVD regardless, the Avengers stuff practically makes it a must-have item.
And for those who demand to see the film as originally presented in theaters, the movie will also be available in a 3-D edition for a limited time. The “Captain America” DVD and Blu-ray will be available on October 25, 2011.
