Lifestyles of the Rich and Feline- What they Eat – What they Wear

We’ve all seen the lifestyles of the rich and the famous; shows like MTV’s “Cribs” tour us through their houses, cars and possessions. We know that these celebrities are “livin’ large.” What about the pets of these celebrities, though? Do their cats get as pampered as the celebrities themselves? Do they get the very best cat food, the best litter boxes, the most fashionable cat collars, the highest grade catnip? Here’s a look inside the secret lives of celebrity cats.

Which Celebrities Own Cats?

You know how they say that some people are “dog people,” while others are “cat people”? Which of the people in Hollywood are deeply attached to their kitties? Here’s the short list:

  • Morgan Freeman
  • Sean Connery
  • Christina Ricci
  • Nicole Kidman
  • Carmen Electra
  • David Bowie
  • John Travolta

That’s only naming a few of them!

Anecdotes of Stars and Their Cats
Ernest Hemingway’s Cat House

Legend has it that the adventurous writer Ernest Hemingway was once given a six-toed cat (a “polydact”) by the captain of a ship. Before Hemingway passed away, he specified in his will that the descendents of that original six-toed cat, Snowball, should be continue to be provided for within his Key West, FL, home.

The keepers of the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum have stayed true to Hemingway’s wishes. At any given time, 40 or 50 cats roam through the house and grounds of Hemingway’s former home. As Hemingway usually named his cats after famous people, the cats there today are also all named after well-known personalities. To name a few:

  • Hairy Truman
  • Benny Goodman
  • Fats Waller

All of them receive the best cat food, veterinary care from a local vet, including routine treatments for ear mites, fleas, worms, annual vaccinations, etc. As the original cat, Snowball, had six toes, visitors to the museum marvel at how many of the wandering kitties are also polydactyl cats.

John Lennon’s Cat Obsession

If not for the fact that John Lennon was an international star and musical influence to thousands of later artists, you might have easily mistaken him for “that crazy cat guy.” At one point, he and his first wife, Cynthia, shared their home with ten cats.

The first cat that joined their home was named Mimi, after an aunt Lennon had been close to. This name was fitting, as his Aunt Mimi was the one who had looked after his cats when Lennon first started going on tour with the Beatles. While on tour, he would frequently call home to ask his aunt specifically to check on his cats.

Later, during his marriage to Yoko Ono, Lennon would sit with his son Sean to draw and paint. Many of his drawings were of cats with simple titles, such as “A Cat Purring” and “A Cat Napping.”

The Little Man of Cameron Diaz

There is one man in the life of Cameron Diaz who has the privilege of having his tummy rubbed regularly by the actress. That man is her cat, named Little Man. She can frequently be spotted buying little cat outfits for the little man, keeping him just as fashionable as she is.

Marlon Brando Picks Up a Stray

Brando was famous for being strong-willed with directors and producers. He frequently had his own idea about how a scene should be played, paying little attention to what the script actually said.

That’s how it came to pass that Brando, a Hollywood “tough guy” who had a soft spot for cats, is holding a cat in the opening scene of the classic movie The Godfather. Originally there was no cat in the scene. Apparently Brando found the gray cat wandering through Paramount’s parking lot just before the filming began. He picked the cat up and the rest is history.
