In the latest news surrounding the alleged physical abuse Charlie Sheen inflicted on his wife Brooke Mueller, several news sites including TMZ are reporting Mueller may recant or soften her police statements about what occurred between the two.

Charlie Sheen is accused of holding a knife to Mueller’s throat on Christmas Day and inflicting other abuse, according to TMZ. News reports state that Mueller’s lawyer has called the incident “one bad night” and said the court will be asked to allow the two to talk so they can save their marriage.

Some of Sheen’s other partners, including ex-wife Denise Richards, have alleged that Sheen abused them. As far back as 1990, Sheen shot ex-fiancee Kelly Preston in the arm. The two ended their relationship shortly thereafter.

Some of those accusing Sheen of abuse, including Richards, have been met with ridicule.

This incident is the latest in a series of high-profile abuse cases in which alleged victims have sought to reconcile with their abusers.

In February, 2009, Rihanna was beaten by singer Chris Brown. She later told news media that she reconciled with him shortly afterward. Although the two have since split, Rihanna has stated she can’t imagine a life in which she never again has contact with Brown.

What are your thoughts about these high-profile alleged abuse cases? Do you think that there is ever hope for a relationship in which physical abuse occurs? If so, under what circumstances?

Please share your thoughts.
