‘Cheer Perfection’ Recap: Drama from the Mamas

TLC is known for its shows that people say exploit children (Toddlers and Tiaras, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo) and their new show, Cheer Perfection, follows roughly the same formula. It premiered Wednesday night and, like Toddlers and Tiaras gives viewers an inside glimpse at “stage moms,” it showed viewers the inside world of cheer moms. Unfortunately, people have been slamming this show before even seeing the first episode.

Viewers were introduced to the coach, Alisha Dunlap, the moms, and of course the cheerleaders. The cameras didn’t show the girls talking about their cheerleading experience, but did show them practicing their routines. Most of the mothers were there, watching their daughters practice their routines. As can be imagined, there was cattiness between the mothers and a lot of drama!

Andrea is Kylie’s mom and she insists that she doesn’t want her daughter to be the best, but rather her own best. However, when the girls are forced to perform their routine to a new song (someone forgot the regular music), Andrea is upset that her daughter bent her knees while performing different tumbling passes. She claims that she doesn’t want to be paying a lot of money for tumbling classes if her daughter isn’t going to take them seriously, which is understandable. Although, being told you have to perform to unfamiliar music minutes before you go on the field certainly had these girls’ nerves rattled. Not to mention, they are preteens.

Cheer Perfection has the potential to be a fun show (Lifetime had Cheerleader Nation which ran a few years back and followed the famed Dunbar Cheerleaders), but TLC needs to lay off the motherly drama just a tad bit. Although there is plenty of drama when it comes to the world of cheerleading, hopefully TLC focuses a little less on that as the season progresses.

Did you watch the series premiere? If so, what did you think? Will you be tuning in again?
