Christina Hendricks graces the television screens of millions of devoted viewers every week in her role as Joan Holloway in Mad Men on HBO. She started out as a high fashion model, but gaining 15 pounds in Italy probably turned Hendricks’ career around.
Christina Hendricks told Health that she gained the weight drinking cappucinos, but it didn’t scare her. In fact, she said, “And I felt gorgeous! I would take my clothes off in front of the mirror and be like, Oh, I look like a woman. And I felt beautiful, and I never tried to lose it, ’cause I loved it.”
What does Christina Hendricks do to keep her curvy figure? While she doesn’t throw all caution to the dietary winds, she does break a few rules sometimes. But she works out to add to the balance. Hendricks does weight training and BOSU ball balance work to mix it up with the treadmill running and actually does the exercises you see in different magazines in her trailer when she has the chance.
Hendricks’ life is also one of balance-seeking. She is newly married to fellow actor Geoffrey Arend, and she loves spending quiet nights at home with him and with friends instead of hitting the Hollywood party scene. But when she does go out, she’s often the star of the red carpet, since she knows how to dress to show herself off.
Christina Hendricks is to me one of the most beautiful women working in Hollywood today by far. She doesn’t have a stick figure with fake boobs. The curves are real, her skin is flawless, and she’s obviously happy and comfortable with who and where she is in life. I would love to see Christina make the leap to feature films myself.
I also love how Christina’s so down-to-earth. It’s an overused phrase, but it fits her to me. She’s real. Centered. That’s why I say Christina Hendricks is a woman to respect. Not all actresses are as mentally secure as she is.
Barring the aforementioned movie, Mad Men fans get to enjoy Christina’s work once a week and all of us can enjoy seeing her at awards shows and anywhere else she appears. In case you’ve never seen or haven’t seen enough of Christina Hendricks, here are a few pictures and a video to tide you over:
