The GLAAD Awards (standing for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) are not new to the bevy of media awards – they’re in their 22nd year – but they are one of the lesser known and publicized awards ceremonies. That could all change this year, however, with well-known and popular TV shows being up for awards this year.
The GLAAD award ceremonies, which will be held in major metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in March/April, honor those who are giving a voice to same-sex equality issues. This year, those nominated for an award include the Fox hit Glee, HBO’s True Blood, and ABC’s Modern Family and Grey’s Anatomy, all of whom have been included for their portrayal of either same-sex couples, same-sex parenthood and other heartfelt issues.
There are also nominations for film portrayals, including “The Kids Are Alright”, which recently received a Golden Globe.
GLAAD is dedicated to recognizing the media’s influence of public perception of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered issues in society, and clearly thought that these shows and films were doing more than their part to educate and inform the public.
