Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) is a staunch opponent of abortion and wants to outlaw the practice. During the hoopla over the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s decision to defund Planned Parenthood, emotions ran high on both sides. People resigned, donors pulled money, politicians, got involved, and others gave more to Planned Parenthood. Rep. Fleming, seeing an opportunity to capitalize, linked to an article from his Facebook page about Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately for the congressman, the link was to the satirical news site, The Onion.
The Onion first published the article in May of 2011. The article titled “Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex” became an instant classic for the news site and people even write fake reviews about the Abortionplex on various websites. Some of the amenities include, ” . . . coffee shops, bars, dozens of restaurants and retail outlets, a three-story nightclub, and a 10-screen multiplex theater.” It also includes Kansas’ largest rock-climbing wall.
Congressman Fleming, apparently spurred to action, posted a link to the article on Facebook with the caption, “More on Planned Parenthood. Abortion by the wholesale.” A comment to his link says, “The Onion is satire. How did you get elected?” Once Fleming or his staff realized what was going on, the link was quickly taken down. Fortunately for everyone, Hudson Hugo, a freelance writer who runs a blog captured the post before it was deleted.
Rep. Fleming shouldn’t feel too bad because he’s not the first to fall victim to mistaking an article on The Onion as real. In 2002, The Beijing Evening News repeated an article almost verbatim. The article parodied Congress as a baseball team and the legislators were threatening to leave town for Memphis or Charlotte if they didn’t get a new capitol building with a retractable roof.
This too shall pass for the Louisiana representative and he will live it down. But either the congressman or someone in his office needs to check their sources before linking to another headline. Doing so will make sure he isn’t a victim of the liberal fake media in the future.
