Contraband may not have made an impression in the commercials for the movie, but once it opened in the movie theatres over the weekend, it managed to snag the top spot at the box office. It knocked the top movie away from the first position, The Devil Inside. And this movie didn’t just get knocked off the first position, but it dropped down – and fast.

The Devil Inside has earned a total of $46 million, but only pulled in $7.9 million this past weekend. It dropped from the first spot on the box office list to the 7th spot, trailing several big movies including Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the rerelease of Beauty and the Beast 3D. So what made Contraband take the top spot, pulling in around $24.1 million in the opening weekend?

Well, according to Inside Pulse, Mark Wahlberg is the master of creating films that earn more than they cost to produce, hence creating a profit for the movie. The movies don’t need to cost much, as he is the king at pulling in a mediocre average for each film. As long as it works for him, he can’t complain about not being a star. Think about it; he makes a nice paycheck each time a movie gets a profit.

Other films on the top ten list include Joyful Noise, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and War Horse. What movie did you see this weekend?
