Cory Monteith, best known for his portrayal of high school football star turned Gleek Finn on the hit Fox comedy Glee, has a secret past that’s nowhere near as squeaky clean as that of his character!

In the latest issue of Parade, out this weekend, Monteith, 29, talks about his past, specifically his years of substance abuse and how rehab saved his life.

Though Monteith is still quite young, his troubled past is far behind him, as he spiraled out of control in his early teens. At just thirteen years old, he was skipping school to do “anything and everything as much as possible,” Cory Monteith tells Parade. “I had a serious problem.”

After stealing a substantial amount of money from a family member to fuel his addiction years into his drug habit, his family issued an ultimatum: Get clean, or they’d turn him over to the police for theft. That proved to be just the wake-up call that Monteith needed, and he entered a treatment facility at 19, choosing his family and his life over a continued downward spiral.

“I was done fighting myself,” he said. “I finally said, ‘I’m gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I’m doing this.’”

Thankfully he did, as he’s not only clean and sober, but reaching new heights in his career playing opposite Lea Michele on Glee!

Now that Cory Monteith plays a role-model type figure, he’s hoping to take on the task himself. His message to kids who may find themselves lost and troubled?

“I don’t want kids to think it’s okay to drop out of school and get high, and they’ll be famous actors, too. But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it. If I can, anyone can.”
