Could the Detroit Lions Trade Titus Young With Another Gaffe?

Finding ways to win is something the Detroit Lions have struggled with for year. They finally have a talented team in place but also a team light on maturity. Could another blowup by Titus Young get him trade out of the Motor City?

History with San Francisco 49ers may push Young to boiling point

Everyone remembers the classic NFL moment when San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh got into a scuffle with Lions coach Jim Schwartz after a somewhat violent handshake at midfield. This came after the 49ers upset Detroit at Ford Field 25-19. Now the Lions head to the west coast for a rematch. This isn’t just a game that could become a playoff preview, it is also a test of patience for wide receiver Titus Young. The promising talent is already in the dog house of Coach Schwartz for head butting a St. Louis Rams player last week. This coming on top of his list of bad penalties last season for unsportsmanlike conduct. Facing the 49ers couldn’t have come at a worse time for him. The last time he went against San Francisco Young managed one catch for 14 yards. Even calm receivers get frustrated against good defenses. What can Detroit expect from Young who has proved he can’t control himself several times? If he does have another meltdown, this time on national TV, the time may have come for the Lions to cut their losses and trade him.

San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills would welcome Young

That said a few teams around the league could really offer Detroit a fair trade if Young went on the block. The most obvious candidate is the Buffalo Bills. They recently suffered two devastating injuries on offense in running back Fred Jackson and receiver David Nelson. Buffalo was already thin at receiver before Nelson went down. Adding Young would give them a credible threat along with Stevie Johnson. In return they might offer up one of their two talented safeties in Jairus Byrd or George Wilson. Byrd is a free agent in 2013. Another team that could use help on offense are the San Diego Chargers. Though they opened the year with a win the Bolts struggled to make explosive plays on offense. They too took some hits to the roster losing running back Ryan Mathews and receiver Vincent Brown. Young would become an instant upgrade playing in an offense led by All-Pro Philip Rivers. In return the Chargers have two reliable corners in Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason who both are free agents next season.

Titus Young holds his career with the Detroit Lions in his hands. Another dumb action against the San Francisco 49ers could end with him getting traded. The San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills can only hope.
