While one New England Patriots tight end got a big pay-day, his teammate Aaron Hernandez sits wondering if there’s enough left for him. Could too much money on offense allow the Oakland Raiders a trade window?

Rob Gronkowski deal leaves little for Hernandez and Wes Welker

Whoever said there can never be too much of a good thing hasn’t watched the New England Patriots handle their money issues on offense. With All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski locked up with a six-year deal, the team has little left for its other major weapons. The two biggest names that come to mind are fellow tight end Aaron Hernandez and wide receiver Wes Welker. Both are Pro Bowl talents and deserve new contracts, but New England can only spend so much money. In such a crisis a team must pay the most indispensable player. History shows that while Tom Brady loves having Hernandez on the field, he can’t think of being in a game without Welker. That’s why the Patriots used the franchise tag on the receiver, leaving Hernandez in line to become a free agent after 2013. This could mean the always active New England front office might try to trade him before that happens, and there is no shortage of teams that would love-making a deal.

Carson Palmer needs a bigger body to go with Denarius Moore

For the first time in ten years, the Oakland Raiders finally have an offense in place defenses won’t laugh at. While the hopes rest with quarterback Carson Palmer, it’s running back Darren McFadden and receiver Denarius Moore that fans hope can turn the Silver and Black into a playoff team. While some have concerns about the Raiders defense, with good reason, Oakland may have a rare case of triangle talent at three key spots on offense. The common phrase is a “Big Three.” While the group hasn’t truly broken out yet, the hopes of fans must stay on paper. One place on offense, however, that could use an upgrade is the tight end. Ever since Zach Miller left for Seattle the Raiders have struggled to find a replacement. Former Giant Kevin Boss flamed out after one season, leaving the roster spot wide open. Never a team to fear big trades, Oakland might keep a close eye on New England. After all they brought Pro Bowl defensive tackle Richard Seymour from there a few years ago and would love a chance to give Palmer a target like Hernandez.

The New England Patriots have time to find a way to keep Aaron Hernandez and Wes Welker no matter how much they paid Rob Gronkowski. Still, money is money, and they only have so much to spend. With the Oakland Raiders needing bigger help for Carson Palmer than Denarius Moore, a trade might work in favor of both teams.
