Today, the successful series of Backbreaker football games for iOS hits the big leagues with ‘NFL Rivals’. Shedding the intricacies of playcalling and extra points, the Backbreaker series breaks the game of football down to its brutal core. Players use motion control to run past defenders, while using the same controls to shut down their opponents on defense. It’s a formula that’s worked well for years, only now it has all 32 NFL Teams.
According to Kotaku, the game has a “Gameday” mode in which you pick a team and play against their real-world opponent for that week. The results are tracked on a global leaderboard, so players can see how well the world has been doing as the Jets or the Chargers, for example.
While just a mobile game Rivals is a significant landmark, as its one of the first NFL-licensed games outside of Madden since NFL 2K5. While EA Sports secured the exclusive rights to make console games based on the league, the agreement doesn’t cover mobile apps. So if you’re looking for some pro football action without the Madden name or engine, this is one of your few options.
NFL Rivals is available on the App Store for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch for $2.99.
