‘Dancing with the Stars’ 2011 Semifinal Performance Review — Hope Solo goes from Daddy’s Girl to Sexy Vixen
Dancing with the Stars 2011 resumed November 14 with the semifinal round of season 13 action. The highlight of the evening for World Cup star Hope Solo was a round two Argentine Tango with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy that one judge called “ambitious.”
But before Hope and Maks brought sexy to the DWTS ballroom, the soccer player shared a bit of personal history that gave insight into her philosophy on life and competition. She shared that she’d grown up in Washington as a daddy’s girl, and that her parents’ eventual divorce had been hard on her. Although she eventually reconnected with her father after a long separation, his death prior to the 2007 World Cup served as a devastating blow. Still, she took inspiration from her experiences, summing up her pre-taped segment with “when odds are against me, I find a way to defy them.”
Set to the catchy and recognizable tune “Whatever Lola Wants,” Hope and Maks’ Argentine Tango was pure spice from a character standpoint. Hope looked the part of the sexy vixen, and she worked her partner like a woman on a mission. But it wasn’t perfect; she also looked awkward and clunky at times, and the dance lacked the ease and natural grace of a really solid Argentine Tango.
By and large, the Dancing with the Stars judges were pleased. Head judge Len Goodman called it “well done,” while Bruno Tonioli praised Hope for not looking like she wanted to “kill Maks all the time.” Carrie Ann Inaba appreciated how well Hope and Maks worked together throughout the routine and called their lifts “ambitious,” but knocked them for lacking in the grace department.
Hope Solo and Maks Chmerkovskiy’s round two dance earned triple eights from the judges, for a total of 24 points. Entering Tuesday’s elimination round, they’re the couple most likely to get the boot, since they earned the fewest judges’ points on the evening. But will they surprise everyone and earn a berth in the Dancing with the Stars 2011 finale next week? Watch the results show to see for yourself.
