Dancing with the Stars 2012 continued April 2 on ABC as the couples danced routines inspired by personal stories. Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins moved the DWTS ballroom to tears with a stunningly beautiful Waltz dedicated to the memory of her late father. As a result, she and partner Mark Ballas ended the night atop the judges’ leaderboard for the third week running.
The lovely blonde shared during rehearsals that her most memorable year was 1996, the year that her father was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away. Katherine said that she hoped her dad would see her Waltz and be “so proud” of her effort.
The singer looked absolutely ethereal in white as she began her dance, which was very appropriately set to the tune of Josh Groban’s “To Where You Are.” Katherine wore her heart on her face as she danced, and the combination of palpable emotion and gorgeous dancing left more than one viewer in tears.
Carrie Ann Inaba called the routine “magic” and said that it was as if Katherine had danced with not only Mark, but her dad as well. Head judge Len Goodman said “it was danced with grace and it was danced with elegance,” but called Mark out for not including more movement in hold. Bruno Tonioli’s commentary was succinct: he simply declared “sensational!”
Katherine and Mark earned the highest scores of DWTS season 14 to date, snagging a 9 from Len and 10s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, for a total of 29. Though they lead entering Tuesday’s elimination, the competition was fierce, and second-place couple William Levy and Cheryl Burke trail by a single point. Five couples tied for last place with 24 points each.
