Dancing with the Stars 2012 resumed May 7 with more action from the six remaining celebrity/professional couples. Included in the mix was Little House on the Prairie actress Melissa Gilbert, whose off-the-ballroom-floor antics with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy probably drew more attention than her Foxtrot, and for all the wrong reasons.
During the duo’s rehearsal segment, Melissa confessed that there had been a significant “uptick in headbutting” between herself and the tall Ukrainian pro hoofer. To prove her point, the clips that followed showed Maks cursing at Melissa, and then accusing her of making him “look like a terrorist.” Melissa denied responsibility for making Maks look bad, instead deflecting the blame squarely onto his shoulders.
With their tension-rife pre-taped bit out of the way, Melissa and Maks hit the DWTS ballroom with a dance set to the tune of the Rod Stewart hit “Maggie May.” Although the actress looked more relaxed as she performed, her movements were still a bit too herky-jerky and frenetic. Melissa needs to really relax into her routines if she wants to stick around.
The judges were, by and large, impressed with what she brought to the table. Carrie Ann Inaba praised Melissa for keeping her shoulders down and despite a few flaws, called it “her best dance.” Len Goodman agreed and called it an example of “good dancing,” but also noted the errors. Bruno Tonioli joked that the “cougar” had gotten the prize “in a much smoother ride,” and called it her best presentation to date.
For their efforts, Melissa and Maks were awarded 24 points, which left them at the bottom of the round one leaderboard behind leaders William Levy and Cheryl Burke, who scored a perfect 30. But before the judges revealed the marks, the embattled duo shared a nice moment with co-host Brooke Burke. Maks expressed his love for Melissa and promised he wouldn’t again behave as badly as he did during rehearsals.
Will Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have another chance to dance together, or will they fall victim to the week 8 double elimination? Tune in to the Dancing with the Stars 2012 results show Tuesday night at 9 p.m. on ABC and find out.
